Did I promise there would be more blogging? Silly me.
My friend Vivike came over today, and among the various things we discussed during our Frisbee tossing expedition was the “deal of the century.” The purchase of Alaska from Russia was perhaps the deal of the nineteenth century. But that was, like, so 151 years ago. It remains to be seen what the deal of the twenty-first century will be. But what, do you think, was the deal of the twentieth century?

I can’t think of any purchases like the Alaska one, but if treaties and such can be seen as deals, there are a few. But they’re not necessarily good…
The outcome of the Yalta conference: it determined the spheres of influence of the US and the Soviet Union after WWII.
And before that, another big one: the treaty of Versailles in 1919, after WWI. Having lost the war, the German people felt humiliated by the treaty. Among other things, Germany had to pay reparations (Wikipedia says 393.6 billion USD in 2005 money) until 1984. It led to sentiments that were used (and fueled) by the nazis on their rise to power.

one might argue that the Louisiana Purchase was the deal of the 19th Century, in 1803, comprising 23 % of the U.S. landmass, portions of 15 states (and small parts of 2 Canadian Provinces!).
